I've been on a mouthpiece journey with Andy Snitzer for a couple of years now. Andy first played my ESP and he liked it quite a bit but he felt that he needed a little more highs in the sound due to the amount of contemporary playing and recording that he does. So I made the ESP-X for Andy and another good friend of mine, Joe Mennonna. They both loved the piece and since then Andy and Joe have been playing nothing but the ESP-X. When I started thinking about the concept for the DV, I was thinking about players like Andy, Ed Calle, Michael Brecker, etc. I felt that these type of players needed more power than the ESP-X gave them. My goal was to create a mouthpiece that would completely conquer the most screaming gigs, yet be versatile enough for a much wider range of playing situations than most bright loud mouthpieces allow. When I let Andy play the DV prototype he was blown away. I won't say that he begged me, but he beseeched me to let him take it to Japan for an important tour the next week. I had to deny his request because at this time I didn't have the Patent finished and Andy or no one else had seen the inside of the mouthpiece. I even insisted on putting his reed on for him so he wouldn't see the secondary window. For me the DV was playing exactly where I wanted it it to be. But when Andy had that reaction I was reassured that I had struck mouthpiece gold because Andy really loved the ESP-X and for him to be ready so quickly to change pieces was big. The same thing happened when Ed Calle played the DV prototype in Miami
in the summer of 2004. Ed strongly requested to be able to play the mouthpiece
on a record he was doing in July but again I had to deny the request.
I love all my mouthpieces, they are like my children and they are all
great to me, but I have never had more confidence in a new mouthpiece
than I have in the DV. "The DV is amazing. It's brighter, louder and fuller than the ESP-X, without sacrificing any of the ease and control. I thought that nothing could exceed the ESP-X in these terms, but I was wrong. If you play modern styles, you MUST try this mouthpiece." Andy Snitzer - NYC
Once again, I am humbled when a great artist feels that one of my mouthpieces is the best piece for him or her. Ed Calle is one of the top saxophone players in the world. Mention Ed's name to any of the most famous most well known players in the world and guaranteed, they know Ed and can't say enough good things about him and his playing. If you don't know Ed's playing do your self a favor and checkout his website. I'm pretty sure after listening to Ed's playing you'll be adding some of his CD's to your collection. Jody Espina "The mouthpiece is amazing. This mouthpiece plays beautifully from top to bottom, loud and soft. I am really having fun playing again. AMAZING piece. Thanks Jody." Ed Calle - Miami, Florida Arturo Sandoval encourages Ed Calle to play the "Eastern Blues". A fast
blues and a touch of funky tenor is always a formula for fun. Prior to performing one of his typically spectacular trumpet solos, Arturo
Sandoval then accompanies on the timbales while Javier Concepcion (piano)
& Ed Calle (tenor saxophone) solo on "The Real McBop" at Disney World's
Epcot Center October of 2005.
"After playing the Jody Jazz Tenor DV mouthpiece for a few seconds the first thought that came into my head was, "Oh, so there's my sound!" This piece makes playing fun again. It has a very rich and powerful sound that enables you to play the entire range of the horn, from low Bb through the altissimo with ease. It gives you the freedom that you're looking for in a mouthpiece." Jeff Kashiwa Skip Spratt is a great player and teacher and he is the author of one of the best saxophone websites anywhere with plenty of free stuff. I often recommend www.saxshed.com to players who ask me for saxophone lessons. Here is what Skip has to say about the Tenor DV: The NEW JodyJazz DV Gold Plated Metal Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece
